What to do around Morlaix this Christmas

Are you coming over to Morlaix Bay in December ? Are you wondering what activities to look out for and which are the best places to visit ? We can offer you our top tips for Christmas markets, shopping trips and free activities - and there’s even the chance for a courageous few to take a chilly dip in the sea... or you could just watch !

Christmas in Morlaix

The picturesque town of Morlaix becomes a veritable winter wonderland around Christmas, as its historic timbered buildings are adorned with fairy lights. As well as the high-street shops and exclusive boutiques, you’ll find 13 Christmas chalets in Morlaix centre from the 12th to the 27th of December, nestling in the courtyard of the Musée des Jacobins like a mini festive village. It’s also worth noting that the shops in Morlaix have arranged a Sunday opening on 13th and 20th December, which makes life much easier for present-hunting !
If you have children, or if you simply love all things Christmas, don’t miss the events in Morlaix on Sunday 20th when Father Christmas can be seen abseiling down the iconic viaduct. Bring your camera !

Local Christmas markets

French Christmas markets always have a fantastic atmosphere and they are great places to find unusual gifts. You can take your time browsing the stalls with tempting displays of crafts, delicious treats and original presents and of course, it’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy some ’vin chaud’ - hot mulled wine !

Fun for families this Christmas

For anyone visiting Morlaix, Carantec, Locquirec and Plougasnou this month, there are plenty of off-season activities to enjoy. You can splash about in our swimming pools at Morlaix and Plouigneau, take part in horse-riding activities in Plougasnou and St-Michel-en-Grève (including Shetland ponies !) and even take a dip in the ocean with the surf school in Locquirec. This is the time of year when you can catch some great waves, and when it’s calmer, you can try your hand at paddle-boarding !

Free festive ideas

To stretch your Christmas budget a little further, you’ll be glad to know that there are plenty of free activities to enjoy here in December. Just off the coast of Carantec, you’ll notice the intriguing island of Île Callot, which is surrounded by water for most of the day – but at low tide, you can walk across and become explorers of this fascinating island, which makes youngsters feel like true adventurers. Do be sure to check the tide times for coming back again, and allow plenty of time !

One thing to make the most of if you’re here is the magnificent Cairn de Barnénez, a prehistoric burial chamber on the heights of Plouezoc’h that’s older than the pyramids. Out of season, this Cairn offers free visits on the first Sunday of December and January (6th December and 3rd January) so put the dates in your diary !

Another free visit that is great for walking off over-indulgence and tiring out energetic youngsters is up on the dizzying heights of Morlaix. Climb the curious alleyways and you’ll soon be up near the viaduct, overlooking the town, the harbour and all the activity below. You really will feel on top of the world !

The whole of Morlaix Bay is spoilt for choice when it comes to coastal paths and cycle tracks, but we also have a new ‘Pitch and Putt’ at the Golf Course in Carantec so you can perfect your swing while enjoying a seaview !

The Great Winter Swim

It’s a tradition in this part of Brittany that some courageous folk go and swim in the sea either to end the year or to begin the next. Known in French as ’Les Bains d’Hiver’ or The Great Winter Swim !, these chilly swims are braved by people every year - and are watched by even more people who prefer to participate as spectators !

There are three dates, so there’s no excuse - you can certainly join in, at least by watching and cheering them on !
In Carantec, this event is held on 26th December at 3pm on Kelenn Beach.
In Locquirec, it’s on 31st December.
In Plougasnou, it’s on the 1st of January. Be on Primel beach at noon to start 2016 in a truly original and invigorating way !

New Year Sales

Finally, a word about when the sales start on this side of the Channel. Unlike in Britain, France still waits until the New Year to hold its annual sales, which begin on 6th January – so if you haven’t quite received everything you wanted for Christmas, you can pop over again to see us, and make the most of the sales to find a few more bargains !
